Friday News- October 10th

"Simply stated, although it is not really simple at all, my job is to transmit to you all the memories I have within me. Memories of the past." This week we started reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is about a utopian community that has sameness and perfection as its way of life. The quote about is from chapter 9 of the book. Jonas learned of his job and he is to be the Receiver of Memory. the old receiver has just started to transmit him one memory, which is of snow and sledding. The class has also started a project that goes along with the book. The class is split into two groups. Each group is designing their own community. It is worth 100 points. Each community must have a government system, education system, recreational activites, a motto, flag, and anthem, trade system, just to name a few. So far they are really liking it. The project will all be done in class.  On Tuesday, the third through eighth graders went to the Cemetary Walk at Evergreen Cemetary. It was raining so we were put into buildings and the actors said their speech inside. It was really great to learn about the lives of former Bloomington people. If you ever would have the chance to go to a Cemetary Walk, I would highly recommend it. This week we also created Joe Biden and Sarah Palin posters. They are outside of Jodi's office along with Barack Obama and John McCain's. Next, week we will be discussing more about campaigning and the electoral college. Please remember that there is no school on Monday (13) or Friday (17). Also, on Wednesday, we will be taking our field trip to the ISU Planetarium to learn more about space.
