October 23rd, 2009
Music- The class is learning how to read music and how to play it on chimes.
Spanish- Chase, Walker, & Navnit are learning greetings, colors, and the alphabet in Spanish. Taimur, Nadia, Jonas, and Devin are working on reading, interpreting, and comprehending small Spanish books.
Science- We have been learning about Moh’s Hardness Scale, the classes of minerals (native elements, carbonates, halides, oxides, sulfates, sulfides), as well as the hardness, streak, luster, density, cleavage, fracture, and crystalline structure of minerals.
Government- We spent the week learning about the basics of each branch of the U.S. Government as well as how they check each other.
Writing- We are working on finishing up our scary stories.
Read Aloud- Meet the Applewhites by Stephanie S. Tolan
Reading- Devin and Taimur are reading The Land of the Silver Apples by Nancy Farmer. So far they have read about Lucy going crazy as a result of a sin of pride her father had. Also, the fever of life forces is spreading and making everyone angry. Chase, Nadia, Navnit, Jonas, and Walker are reading Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. They learned that Ender is a third and is heading off to Battle School. Battle school is very hard to get into.
Math- Devin and Taimur are learning about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing real numbers, multiplying matrices, frequency polygons, and the properties of equalities. Jonas is working on the distributive property and grouping. Chase is working on permutations, tree diagrams, and factorials. Nadia has been spending time on lattice multiplication, magnitude estimation, polygons, mean, median, mode, and range. Walker has been working on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, stem and leaf plots, frequency tables, as well as circle and bar graphs. Navnit has been working on logic problems, estimating distances and converting fractions to decimals.
